Delegation is a critical business skill, but it can be difficult for many entrepreneurs. Deciding which tasks must be done by you and which you should assign to others takes practice. In this article, Vinod Ramchandra Jadhav shares seven tasks entrepreneurs should learn to outsource or delegate to someone else.
Before we get into the details of which tasks you should learn to delegate, let’s look at the applicable general rule. Of course, you can’t always follow general rules. Sometimes they don’t apply, but they’re an excellent place to start when making a quick decision. In this case, the general rule is if you are an entrepreneur, spend your time doing only those things that only you can do. In other words, if someone else can do it, let them.
Let this rule float around in your head throughout the day. Each time you begin to take on a task, ask yourself if you are the only one that can do this. If so, go ahead. If not, assign it to someone else. This exercise aims to keep you on track, doing crucial things. If you catch yourself spending more than just a minute on trivial tasks, ideas, or decisions, step out of “the thick of it.”
As you learn to delegate better, start with this list of seven tasks that too many entrepreneurs get caught up with when they don’t need to. Depending on your business, you may not be able to unshackle completely from these tasks, but someone else can do most of them.
- Social media management: Social media is probably the worst time waster. It has to be done, but not by the person driving the organization. You set the tone and outline expectations; someone else can create posts and handle replies.
- Blogging and writing: Thousands of highly qualified freelance writers will be happy to create engaging content on any topic you can imagine. It’s not expensive, and you can make any edits you want.
- Calendar management: Have your assistant manage your calendar.
- Travel arrangements: While your assistant manages your calendar, he or she can also take care of your travel arrangements.
- Taxes and bookkeeping: For nearly everyone, this is best outsourced.
- Research: You can direct and review, but not conduct, research. Unless you are in a highly technical field and are the only technical person in the company, research is made easy by modern search engines and other internet tools.
- Operations: The day-to-day operations of your business should be almost entirely out of your domain. You cannot focus on growth strategies if you are working the assembly line, so to speak.
As an entrepreneur, your success, and the welfare of your employees, depends on your ability to focus on vital tasks. If you let yourself get sidetracked by trivial matters, you increase your risk of failure. You can’t, and shouldn’t try to, work all the time; instead, learn to exercise laser-focused discipline when you are.
