Shades of the Past brings back classic cars, music to downtown | News, Sports, Jobs

MARSHALL – It started out as way to bring people together again after the COVID pandemic canceled summer events in 2020. But the first ever Shades of the Past Downtown Roll-In was such a success, community members are continuing the event.

“We’re super excited to bring it back this year,” said Chad Weyh, one of the organizers of the Roll-In.

Shades of the Past will be holding its second Roll-In downtown on Thursday afternoon. Area residents can check out classic cars on Marshall’s Main Street, as well as enjoying music and games, and browsing local businesses.

The event will run from 3-8 pm Part of Main Street will be closed to traffic during that time, so participants can park their vehicles downtown.

“It’s kind of like Crazy Days with cars,” Weyh said.

The roll-in is more casual than Shades of the Past’s annual car show in that there isn’t a registration fee to participate, Weyh said. Participants are welcome to show vehicles like cars, trucks and motorcycles.

The response to last year’s Roll-In was a positive one, club members said. The event drew participants from surrounding communities and from as far away as Luverne and Pipestone, Weyh said. The Roll-In also had support from downtown businesses.

“The businesses liked it,” said Shades of the Past President Kenny DeVries. “It was a big success last year.”

Weyh said this year organizers worked with local businesses and sponsors like Runnings and Visit Marshall to bring back the Roll-In. In addition to the classic cars on display, there will be music, activities like face painting, and vendors downtown.

Weyh and DeVries said club members are hoping for warm weather and a good crowd on Thursday.

“It’s a great way to kick off our year and the events we do,” Weyh said. Over the summer, Shades of the Past will hold a variety of events like the annual car show in June, and an ice cream social and cruise for local assisted living residents.
