FLINT, MI – Flint Community Schools has identified 13 vacant properties to try and sell off.
A vote during the Thursday, June 16, board workshop meeting caps a prioritization process that the district’s Thrun Law Firm attorney has been requesting from the school board for months, as the district pushes to cut costs to get out of its projected $ 3.7 million operating budget deficit.
The district will begin accepting proposals for the available properties on July 1.
Cook Elementary, Dort Elementary, Garfield Elementary, Johnson Elementary, King Elementary, Lowell Middle School, Manley Elementary, Merrill Elementary, Stewart Elementary, Washington Elementary, Williams Elementary, Wilkins Elementary, and Zimmerman Center were all chosen to sell.
Several properties are being discussed in plans to build new buildings, as outlined in the new Flint schools strategic plan. Those are not included in the list of available properties.
Superintendent Kevelin Jones and the administration recommended 13 properties that could be let go. They also recommended properties to keep and “maybe keep.”
“Flint Community Schools is trying to get these properties off of our books,” Jones told the board. “We are operating in a deficit and want to make sure we are doing our due diligence for the children.”
Jones urged the need to keep properties in “central locations” to not hinder future plans for the district, which include building new schools.
This way, the district wouldn’t have to buy any new property.
Interested buyers will find Request for Proposals on the Flint Community Schools website beginning July 1.
All final decisions to sell properties will be approved by the district’s Board of Education, which has expressed interest in selling properties to local buyers who may use the property to serve the community.
